Fear/2

Natalia
Age: 10

N: Have you got any particular Fears?

I am scared of thieves because I everyday watch at the TV that more and more houses and families get to the trap of them and get stolen. I am really afraid of them that sometimes beacause of my fear my fantasy creates sounds that I think that the thieves are in my house or
around me while I am asleep.

I am also scared of one fairytale story since I was really young. The fairytale story is about Snow white but am not scared of her but from the witch that transform her self to one really ugly and scary old woman and tried to poison Snow white with an apple.

N: What scares you so much of the witch?

Her face it looks really scary. A n old woman doesn't look like her, her nails, nose and eyes.

Feelings: Strong Heartbeats, Stomach pains and tears.

Fear

Is really interesting exploring the emotive side of people’s memory and researching the reaction of different occasions and situations that they went through affecting their feelings and causing a reaction.

Research showed that emotions such as anger, fear, shame are connected with survival and more often with defense without always being negative or positive.

Carroll Ellis considers that the conscious mind has a strong movement to be active and within its activity typically involves images, thoughts, and affective cognitive orientations that final being the most common structures in consciousness (Ellis: 1977, Human Emotions).

However a further research was conducted by asking different people and ages what kind of fears they have and what has caused them and what do they feel when they have this particular emotion?

Stelios

Age: 49

N: Do you have any fears?

I do have two fears in my life since I was really young which if I come across to something similar in my life I do get panic attacks.

N: What are these fears and how were created?

a) My biggest fear started when I was 13 in 1974 when the war in Cyprus happened with the Turks.

The bombs and the gun shots scared me and shocked me when now if I hear any sounds similar to them my heart beat goes really fast because I fear that the war is being repeated and that I will go through all these experiences again seeing people and children being killed, destroyed houses explosions e.t.c.

b) My second fear created a bit earlier than my biggest fear when I was 11 and I went for swimming with my brothers at the harbor. As I was swimming my brother had a stupid idea in order to make a joke to me to jump on my back as I was under the water swimming and not to let me breathe for a while. I was under the water enable to breathe as there was not any oxygen left and I swallowed a lot of water. After that I got in panic and really scared that now I am scared to swim because I believe is going to happen to me again.

Feelings: panic, fast heart beats, loosing the ability of control.

Power Of Nightmares 1 of 6

Few weeks ago I met with a graphic designer Antonis Adamou and I had a chat about my final major project telling him how I am interested in looking into emotions that are stuck in people's memories from some particular situations or occasions.
However after a long talk with Antonis suggested that it would be better to concentrate at one emotion that for my own personal reason I would like to concentrate on instead of looking in all the areas of emotions.

After gathering through my research I found really interesting to look into fear or phobias that people have after an experience that they went through by causing a negative or positive reaction in their memory.

It was really interesting the link that he gave me for a documentary called Power Of Nightmares that it has to do with fears. Even though involves politics, religion and educational system it shows how people are in control because of the fears that are created to them from different situations.

Seasons and Time

Seasons of time one really interesting acrylic on canvas representing seasons with an abstract way. The colour pattern that the artist used is really interesting and really clear for the viewer to understand the season theme. However the artist in order to make the time more obvious divided the canvas in three sections and a face appear all over the canvas which it looks almost like a hidden theme.

Hidden themes

Hidden messages is information that is not immediately noticeable, and that must be discovered or uncovered and interpreted before it can be known. Hidden messages include backwards audio messages, hidden visual messages and symbolic or cryptic codes such as a crossword.

Nursery rhymes

Nursery rhymes reflect events in history and where available we have included the meanings, history and origins. Like for instance 'Ring a Ring o Rosies' which refers to the Bubonic plague. However nursery rhymes lyrics were used to parody the royal and political events of the day; direct dissent would often be punishable by death! Strange how these events in history are still portrayed through children nursery rhymes, when for most of us the historical events relationship to the nursery rhymes themselves are long forgotten! The Rhyme allowed an element of free speech.
Also
Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary rhyme which featured a hidden reference to the Queen's treatment of Protestants using instruments of torture (silver bells) and execution by burning them alive at the stake.

Tord Boontje

Tord Boontje was born in enschede, netherlands in 1968 and he studied industrial design. He explores cues from nature, rich coloration and visual layering to create lyrical and highly-detailed objects.
His work is layered. The layers shift, sometimes its really pretty and uplifting, sometimes its more dark and scary like a scary story, like an alfred hitchcock film! Sometimes its very floral and sometimes its much cooler and reduced and abstract.
I find his work really inspiring as it has more potential for typography and visual graphic design.

Peter Callesen

Danish artist Peter Callesen makes amazing sculptures from paper.
I really like the simple whiteness and complexity of his work. Of course, the more complicated papercut sculptures will tend to impress most viewers because of the high level of skill and craft needed to make them. However is really impressive how with a piece of paper can create master simple designs.I think it takes more courage as an artist to exhibit very minimal work, the less you have, the more focus there is on it and the more exact it needs to be.
